This could be one of the hardest events to understand this year. No Americans have the Olympic Standard in the men’s hammer. The Standard was set ridiculously high (77.00m) and only 26 athletes in the world have met the qualifying mark.
Olympic procedure will use the World top marks list to give invites in a descending order to fill the field (much like the Olympic Trials procedure).
According to HmmerMedia.com USATF will accept invites from the International Olympic Committee based on the top placers at the Olympic Trials even if their mark within the Olympic window is higher.
“USATF shall accept any invitations extended to U.S. athletes if such acceptance does not displace an athlete who has finished ahead of the invited athlete(s) at the Trials and . . . who is also in a position to receive an IAAF invitation . . . The intent is that, to the extent possible, the order of finish at the U. S. Olympic Trials- Track & Field shall determine whether an athlete competes in the Olympic Games . . . “
So basically top three men at the Olympic Trials have a good shot of filling the Olympic field in the men’s hammer, but nothing looks clear cut.
Video has surfaced on YouTube of Rudy Winkler throwing 77.78m, which would make him the first American to throw the Olympic Standard. He threw this at the NY Hammer Elite Series on June 23rd. This is a USATF Sanctioned meet, and would be the ninth best throw this year in the men’s hammer, but neither IAAF nor USATF has this on their top marks list yet.
Veterans Kibwe Johnson and AG Kruger don’t seem to give up, especially on Olympic years; they have thrown 74.98m and 73.54m respectively.
Conor McCullough won the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 2015. He has thrown 74.79m so far this year and has been the most consistent thrower in the U.S. this year.
Finally don’t forget about Sean Donnelly and Michael Lihrman (74.35m and 73.70m respectively). They could very well take a top spot at the Trials and get an invite from the IOC to the Olympic Games.
