Body Types

Did you hit puberty early or late in your adolescent stage? Your answer is surprisingly correlated with the body type that you have. There are generally three body types, mesomorphic (muscular and broader shoulders), endomorphic (rounder and broader hips) and ectomorphic (slender and tall). Adolescents that enter puberty earlier normally develop into either mesomorphic or endomorphic adults while later puberty development indicates ectomorphic adulthood. This may help explain the friend in middle school with a 5 O’clock shadow that dominated the other kids on the playground as well as the tiny sophomore kid that came back junior year looking like he is ready for the NBA.

Each of the three body types deserves specific attention to maximize their potential to reach their goals. A good coach may have an objective standard for his/her team, but can also use the strengths and weaknesses of each body type to reach that standard. Recognize what body type you have, hone your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Train smart and never forget to #TrainBIG.
