Women’s discus could be one of those surprise events where almost anyone in the field could make the team. Ten women have the Olympic standard but only the top three women WITH the Olympic Standard at the Olympic Trials will make the Olympic team.

Favored to Win

Whitney Ashley is the standout in the field (64.62m); throwing really consistently well all year long at the big meets all over the world. But the Olympic Games aren’t a lock for anyone, especially in the women’s discus.

Who to Watch

Wisconsin’s Kelsey Card won the NCAA Championships in the disc with a throw of 63.52m in Eugene, Oregon. Clearly she can throw well at Hayward Field.

2008 Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton has been throwing really well this year (63.09m). She seems to always line things up on Olympic years, so watch to see what she can do at the Olympic Trials.

Hannah Carson of Texas Tech is doubling in the javelin as well as the discus (61.97m). She is just shy of the Olympic standard in the javelin, but it will be interesting to see if she focuses on one event or tries to make the team in both! (*Did not advance to finals)

Liz Podominick (61.67m) is a consistent thrower in the U.S. the last few years, and is a definite contender for a podium spot at the Olympic Trials. Track and Field news has her ranked third on their formchart.
